Okay.... So the guys aren't big fans of these two cars.
But we're obsessed with driving fun. It's why we exist.
Is there a point at which Gas Cost or the Environment overshadows everything else in your car purchase? |

There is a point where environmental protection and cost of fuel will overtake the "fun to drive" category, but we are no where near that point.
Gas is still relatively cheap, and they make "fun to drive" cars that get good mileage. Not to mention that electric cars are more poisonous than other alternatives (compressed air, natural gas, etc). The batteries require heavy metals that are taken from the earth via destructive mining, the battery acid is extremely toxic, and the cost of the batteries are astronomical. So how are hybrids/electric cars saving the earth at all?
As for the smart, it is a fantastic car. But, america isn't ready for a city car and probably won't be for quite some time. Most people are used to there big lounge cruisers, and take the freeway. Not a lot of city driving.
I guess we'll have to wait to see what the future holds. |

I thought about a prius for an instant. My girlfriend drives one and it has a small fun factor. It's this compact little bugger that feels like an oversized RC car. But once you get going, it loses that RC car appeal immediately. Although it's awesome to get 50 mpg without trying, and it's fully capable of driving in slightly more aggressive freeway driving, it's still too expensive to justify it's increase in environmental "value". Even if I cared that much about the environment, there are fun cars out there putting out partial zero emmissions, get 30-35 average MPG (casual driving), it's easier for for me to put 35 bucks in my tank for a week and a half of fun driving as opposed to 30 bucks every 2 and half weeks to get me around. I'm not yet a working super stiff who feels numb to my drive, my drive is actually something I now look forward to with my new car. Another option I saw with Toyota was the Yaris, my friend is getting great mileage with that thing. 15k out the door, fills his tank every 2 weeks, and it's small, light and nimble! Overall fun prevails for me right now.
Now if someone designed a speedy little hybrid that could still squeeze out 40 mpg, that would be interesting. |
