I personally am looking at the new clean diesel cars that are coming. Or even existing diesels.
The models I'm currently keeping a keen eye on are the TDIs from Volkswagen and Audi. No need for urea injection I've read. Unlike BMW and Benz. I've been corresponding with a Mercedes dealer close to my area and from an insider of his, Benz is still out on whether the consumer will pay for the AdBlue refills every 15,000 miles or make it part of the service change under warranty. That says to me that things are gonna leap into the stratosphere for owning a diesel that requires the urea to clean up the emissions as opposed to a hybrid, or even a gasoline powered car.
But, on the other hand, the TDIs from Volkswagen seem to have virtually eliminated the need for Adblue. They've achieved this in that a nitrogen oxide reservoir in the catalytic converter is used to help it meet the Tier 2 / Bin 5 levels. They use a filter in the catalytic converter and it absorbs NOx and consistantly cleans itself by alternating modes for a few seconds periodically. It's been said that it will achieve a 90% reduction in NOx levels. [Paraphrased from Automobile Magazine] But, everyone alrady knows that, and I would expect VeeDub to share with the rest of the family.
I've been smitten with the A4 Avants since I saw the review on Paul's. Currently, diesel is sitting at $4.59 a gallon. Gasoline at $3.79. Premium at $4.05.
According to fueleconomy.gov, the 2008 A4 2.0T with automatic, on premium gas 19 city and 27 highway nets you 329 miles with a fill-up cost of roughly $67, about 22 mpg.
According to an article on diesels in Europe, heading to the US, Audi's official EPA numbers for A4 with 3.0 diesel are 30 city and 52 highway. Around 40 mpg. I could definately see myself filling up for $0.54 to go 18 more miles, 3 cents a mile. Once the engine is broken in, the numbers will be even better. And as a hybrid is ready to have it's battery changed at 10 years, a diesel is just getting broken in.
Diesels are the way for me. I can't wait for GM to release their 2.9d diesel in the 2010 CTS so I can net me a 2010/2011 CTS Wagon. Watch out A4 Avant! |
